The actual weight bearing capacity of a vehicle roof can vary greatly according to the vehicle year, make and model. Most vehicle roofs are not very strong and most dealers I have spoken with do not recommend putting more than 40 or 50 lbs directly on the roof.

I would recommend using the non-skid protection pad, # RL100650, with a roof mounted cargo bag if it will be sitting directly on the roof of your 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The straps of the cargo bag will be secured to your roof rack side rails, but when you brake and accelerate, the bag will want to slide forward or backward. The slide may be minimal, but if there is any dirt or debris under the bag when it wants to slide, then you may find scratches on your roof after a trip.

There are a couple of reasons why I don't think using this without a roof rack is the best way to go, but I'm not going to tell you that it's not possible. The difference between carrying objects on your naked roof compared to when mounted to a roof rack with cargo carrier, is that the roof racks are going to be mounted to the strongest points on the vehicle roof and distributing the load to the pillars/frame of the vehicle. Check the side rails on your Terrain. There may be a sticker with a weight rating on it. If it is present I would either go by it or the capacity listed for if the vehicle had crossbars. It would also be a good idea to call a GMC dealer and speak with someone who may be able to give you the roof carrying capacity.

I believe your dealer might be mistaken. According to the 2008 Uplander owners manual, the roof rack has a capacity of 150 lbs. This information is found on page 2-60. This assumes that your rails are factory installed from Chevy.

I had a teammate measure the side straps of the Rhino-Rack Rooftop Cargo Bag # RRLB350, and the straps measure 26 inches. Given that the width of the bag is 37-1/2 inches, that leaves a combined length of 63.5 inches. We only have one showroom at our Headquarters in Wentzville, Missouri. This is one of our largest roof mounted cargo bags. It holds 13 cubic feet of Cargo. You would be able to fit about 3-5 large suitcases in it. You could probably fit a closet full of clothes in it, provided you are not talking about a large walk-in closet.
